El Dia Que Me Quieres

Cesar Menendez, "El Dia Que Me Quieres", 2001, 48" x 56", oil on canvas, signed and dated lover left.

Menendez's exceptional paintings depict a surreal world that reflects death and tragedy. Much of the inspiration for this tortured pre-occupation comes from the struggles of the Central American people with ruling military dictatorships through history.

The bold coloration and use of imagery emphasizes the mystery and the anguish which are common to his aggressive, plastic style.

César Menéndez was born in Sonsonate, El Salvador in 1954. He received his BFA from Centro Nacional de Artes in Sal Salvador. In 1981 Menéndez won a Central American painting contest and received a scholarship to study in New Yourk. After four years abroad, he returned to El Salvador. Presently, he resides in a country estate called, Quinta Nilayán (meaning "place of peace" in Sanskrit). Throughout his artistic career, Menéndez  has participated in more than 100 exhibits in different parts of the world such as Panama, the United States, Cuba and Italy. Among his most prestigious awards are Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from France (1996) and first place at the Miami Biennial (1986). His work can be found in the permanent collections of the El Museo del Barrio, New York, El Museo de Las Américas, O.A.S., Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, California, among others.
