Elmar Rojas was born in Guatemala in 1938.  Originally an architect, he studied art at the National School of Plastic Arts of Guatemala, Madrid, Paris and Perugia in Italy.

He has won many international awards, including the Gran Premio Iberoamericano "Cristobal Colon", in Madrid for his 1964 painting, El Gran Paseo.

Elmar Rojas has been painting for more than thirty five years.  He is known world-wide for his abstract style depicting the "scarecrow" character from Guatemalan myth.  A distinctive characteristic of his painting is the vibrant coloration on impeccably prepared surfaces.
